A family snorkeling trip in the Bahamas turned tragic after a British mother died trying to reach her two sons when a powerful current swept the children away. The woman, identified as being 36 years old, was recovered from the water but later died at a local clinic despite medical efforts to revive her.

Investigators have opened a probe into the sudden death following the incident near Bimini. Officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force were alerted shortly after 10am on Tuesday regarding an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police indicated that the individual is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.

According to authorities, the woman was snorkeling with her husband and their two children near the island's southern point. A strong current reportedly swept both boys away, and the mother was subsequently caught by the same current as she attempted to assist them. The two sons were subsequently rescued from the water, but the woman was also pulled from the sea and brought to the dock.

Upon arrival, officers learned the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical attention. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock before the transfer. A local doctor pronounced her dead at the medical facility, despite efforts to save her life.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that foul play is not suspected in relation to the death at this time. To establish the precise cause of mortality, an autopsy will be carried out. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains active.

Following the report, a Foreign Office spokesperson released a statement regarding the matter. The statement read, 'Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas.' The spokesperson further noted that officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to her family.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the details of the drowning incident. The family remains in contact with consular officials as inquiries proceed. No further details regarding the sons' conditions or the husband were released by the police or foreign officials.
