China's AI Giant Secures $15 Billion Boost Amidst U.S. Tech Tensions

DeepSeek has closed a massive funding round just days after Washington ordered federal agencies to drop the company's technology from government systems.

For American consumers and businesses relying on advanced artificial intelligence tools, the competitive landscape just shifted again. Two days after the United States mandated that federal civilian agencies strip out DeepSeek's AI technology from their networks over security worries, the Chinese startup announced it had raised approximately $15 billion. This sum, equivalent to about 100 billion yuan, stands as one of the largest funding rounds ever recorded for a Chinese tech company.

The timing of this financial injection is striking. It arrives at a moment when U.S. government entities are actively removing the technology from their infrastructure. Yet, the money is flowing in from major domestic players. Bloomberg reports that potential investors for this round include CATL, a prominent Chinese battery manufacturer, and Tencent, the tech giant that operates the WeChat messaging platform. Other entities are also reportedly part of the investment group.

This new capital follows a busy summer for the Hangzhou-based firm. In June, DeepSeek secured more than $7 billion in funding, which valued the company at $50 billion. By July, reports indicated the startup was seeking an additional $1.5 billion at a higher valuation of around $71 billion. These moves were part of a broader strategy that included plans for a potential initial public offering in China as early as next year.

With the fresh billions in hand, DeepSeek is preparing to increase its spending significantly. The company aims to expand its AI infrastructure and develop open models for both domestic and international markets. This aggressive expansion comes despite the friction with U.S. regulators. The report suggests that DeepSeek's growth could intensify competition among other AI developers within China, forcing rivals to accelerate their own development timelines and capital raising efforts.

The funding round is part of a wider trend of global investors pouring billions into AI companies to gain an edge in the technology race. In May, Moonshot AI, the developer behind the Kimi model, secured $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation. Earlier this month, Manus AI raised over $500 million. Public markets are also seeing strong valuations for Chinese AI firms. Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which went public in Hong Kong in January, now hold market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng. He previously co-founded High-Flyer, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund that provided early financial support for the startup. The company first caught the world's attention in early 2025 by releasing a free, open-weight reasoning model. This move challenged the dominance of established U.S. AI providers and highlighted the cost-efficiency of the new model.

According to corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen, Liang retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the company's Chinese operating entity following the previous funding round. This significant ownership share suggests that the founder maintains strong control over the strategic direction of the firm, even as it scales rapidly with the new external capital.

The U.S. order to remove DeepSeek's technology from federal systems was driven by security concerns regarding data handling and potential access to sensitive information. While the company continues its global push, the domestic U.S. market may see a period of adjustment as agencies finalize the removal process and evaluate alternative AI solutions for their operations.

DeepSeek has not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the new funding round or the impact of the U.S. restrictions on its business plans. The company's next moves will be watched closely by investors and competitors alike as it navigates this complex geopolitical and financial landscape.
